Having two small children I appreciate the precious memory of honest, unhurried and loving care in pregnancy and birth. I also feel at our home birth my partner got more of a chance to enjoy the experience. Breastfeeding my kids has been the next best thing I've ever done. I love helping other mums and babies get the benefits too.

I have been a registered midwife for over 10 years. During this period I have worked for the NHS, in hospitals and the community.

I became a mother before I became a midwife. My personal experience of pregnancy reassured me that human physiological processes, if respected, can be trusted. However, you also need to be able to build helpful relationships and trust with those who attend you. Otherwise you may carry painful emotional memories for a very long time. Since being a midwife I have attended many home births and mostly they go very well indeed. One particular highlight was attending my own daughter's powerful and hard first labour and the gentle undisturbed home birth of my grandson.

I qualified as a nurse in 1980 and as a midwife in 1994. I have worked most of the time as a community-based NHS midwife and still do this a few days a week in Nottingham.
